Mesopotamia refers to the place where humans first formed civilizations. The
first people gathered here. Governments in big cities learn to write. And that
is why Mesopotamia is called the cradle of civilization.

The word Mesopotamia means the land between rivers
when people say they are referring to Mesopotamia. A portion of land in the Middle East between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. And around it today the
land is mostly in Iraq.
There is southeastern Iran and southeastern
Turkey. And there are parts of northeastern Syria. The heart of Mesopotamia
lies between two rivers. The land of southern Iraq is fertile. And there is
plenty of water around the two great rivers.
