How and on what terms did the US and Iran agree to a two-week ceasefire ‘at Pakistan’s request’?

It was the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. Pakistan’s clocks were showing 3:32 PM, the US capital Washington was 6:32 PM and Iran was at 2:22 AM.

There was only one hour and 28 minutes left before the deadline given to Iran by US President Donald Trump expired. He had threatened that ‘tonight the entire civilization will end.’

Trump had repeatedly demanded that Iran open the Strait of Hormuz and had threatened to push it ‘back to the Stone Age’.

While the latest threat to completely destroy Iranian civilization had given rise to many terrifying speculations. Everyone was thinking that the US was going to take some very horrible and destructive step.

The world was waiting for the time to come when at 3:32 PM Pakistani time, a post was made from the US President’s social media platform Truth Social.

This post announced a two-week conditional ceasefire.

Donald Trump wrote: “Based on my conversations with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, I am suspending bombing and attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks.”

The US President’s post also made it clear that this ceasefire would be bilateral.

Donald Trump said that the Prime Minister and Field Marshal of Pakistan asked him not to attack Iran tonight, on the condition that Iran agree to immediately open the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that the reason for suspending the war is that we have already achieved all military objectives and are very far along in a final agreement with Iran regarding long-term peace and peace in the Middle East.

In the post, Donald Trump said that he had received a 10-point proposal from Iran and that he believed it provided a workable basis for negotiations.

The US President also said that ‘the United States and Iran have reached an agreement on almost all the different points of the past conflicts, but this two-week period will help finalize the agreement and implement it.’

Israel, a country involved in the conflict, has supported US President Trump’s conditional decision to suspend attacks for two weeks, but has also said that the ceasefire will not apply to Lebanon.

The statement issued by Israel said: ‘Israel supports US efforts to ensure that Iran can no longer pose a nuclear, missile and terrorist threat to the United States, Israel, its Arab neighbors and the world.’

According to the statement, the US has told Israel that efforts will be made to achieve these common goals during the negotiations.

Pakistan has invited the negotiating teams to Islamabad on Friday following the ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote in his message on X that he looks forward to sharing more good news in the coming days.

Shehbaz Sharif wrote in his message that ‘With utmost humility, I am happy to announce that Iran and the United States, along with their allies everywhere, including Lebanon, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire.’

He said, ‘I warmly welcome this wise decision and thank the leadership of both countries. I also invite their negotiating teams to visit Islamabad on Friday, April 10, 2026, for further talks to resolve all disputes.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has said in its latest statement that in the past forty days, the resistance of the Iranian people and armed forces has forced the enemy to retreat, and most of the goals of the war have been achieved.

According to the statement, Iran had decided from the beginning that the war would continue until the enemy is driven to a state of regret and despair and the long-term threats against the country are eliminated.

The statement said that Iran has rejected several deadlines given by the US President and made it clear that no delay from the enemy is given any importance.

According to the Supreme National Security Council, now that Iran has the upper hand on the battlefield, and the US has accepted most of its demands, it has been decided that the talks will be held in Islamabad on Friday in order to consolidate the achievements made in the war at the political level. According to the statement, the talks will last for a maximum of 15 days and this period can be extended if necessary.

What is Iran’s 10-point agenda on which the US agreed to the talks?

According to the Iranian state broadcaster, the points on which the US is negotiating are part of the 10-point plan presented by Iran. These points include ending the ongoing wars in the region and important political and economic guarantees for Iran.

Key points of Iran’s 10-point plan:

A complete end to the war in Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.

A complete and permanent end to the war against Iran, without any time limit.

An end to all conflicts throughout the region.

Reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Establishing protocols and conditions for safe and free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Full compensation for Iran’s reconstruction costs.

Complete lifting of all sanctions on Iran.

These points are part of the framework that the US President also described on the Truth Social Post as a ‘workable basis for negotiations’.

And then Iran officially announced the opening of the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks.

An official statement was issued by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, which Donald Trump also shared on his Twitter.

In his statement, Abbas Araqchi said: ‘On behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed brothers, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif of Pakistan and Field Marshal Asim Munir, who have made tireless efforts to end the war in the region.’

He wrote that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif made a fraternal request ex post and the United States requested negotiations with 15-point proposals, along with the US President announcing that he accepts Iran’s 10-point proposals as the basis for negotiations.

Abbas Araqchi wrote: ‘In view of this, I formally announce on behalf of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran that if attacks against Iran are stopped, our armed forces will cease their defensive operations.’
