American
technology company Apple has reported higher-than-expected profits in the first
four months of the year, but has warned that US tariffs are disrupting the
supply chain and could increase the company's costs.
According to
the AFP news agency, the company's head Tim Cook has said that the tariffs
could increase Apple's costs by $900 million in the current quarter, although
the impact of the tariffs was limited at the beginning of the year.
Tim Cook
also expressed the possibility that most iPhones sold in the United States will
have to be manufactured in India.
At the same
time, Tim Cook said that Apple products are currently exempt from President
Trump's very tough tariffs.
Apple CEO
Tim Cook added that "we are not in a position to accurately assess the
impact of the tariffs, because we cannot say for sure what new measures will be
taken by the end of this quarter."
"If
current global tariff rates, policies and regulations do not change this
quarter and new tariffs are not imposed, we estimate that the impact will
increase our costs by $ 900 million."
US President
Donald Trump had temporarily eliminated tariffs on smartphones, semiconductors
and computers.
Technology
expert Rob Enderle says that although smartphones are currently completely
exempt from Trump's tariffs, the parts used in the manufacture of Apple
products are subject to tariffs.
Tim Cook
added that iPads, Macs, Apple Watches and AirPods sold in the US will be
manufactured in Vietnam.
However, he
clarified that Apple products sold outside the US will be manufactured in
China.
Tim Cook
said in a conversation with experts, "We learned some time ago that having
everything in one place increases a lot of risk, so we have been looking for
new supply chain opportunities during this period."
