Weight
loss drugs may also slow down aging: Research
A new study
has revealed that the popular weight loss drug Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs
may also slow down the rate of physical or biological aging.
According to
research published by the University of California San Diego, GLP-1 drugs based
on semaglutide are likely reprogramming the body's cells, making the immune
system more effective and reducing inflammation in the body. As a result, the
body's decline or aging process may slow down at the cellular level.
Several medical
benefits of GLP-1 drugs have been revealed before, and the San Diego research
team believes that these benefits may be linked to a decrease in the rate of
biological aging.
However, the
researchers have clarified that more research is still needed to understand the
whole process.
Professor
Michael Corley, who led the study, said scientists are not saying that
semaglutide can reverse aging or make people younger, but the team is finding
evidence that it can slow down some of the biological processes associated with
aging.
About 30
million Americans are currently taking GLP-1 drugs. These drugs are used not
only for weight loss but also to treat other medical conditions, including type
2 diabetes and heart disease.
