Russia
and Ukraine have agreed to immediate talks for a ceasefire: President Trump
US President
Donald Trump has said after a telephone conversation with President Vladimir
Putin that Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin talks for a ceasefire.
However, Moscow says it will take time.
According to
the British news agency Reuters, the US president has also indicated that he is
not ready to join the new sanctions imposed by the European Union to pressure
Moscow.
Donald Trump
wrote in a post on social media that after talking to the Russian president, he
informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as the leadership of
the European Union countries France, Italy, Germany and Finland, through a
group call
According to
him, ‘Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin negotiations on a ceasefire and
specifically an end to the war.’
Later,
President Trump told reporters at the White House that ‘some progress’ was
being made on the issue.
Russian
President Putin thanked Donald Trump for supporting direct talks between Moscow
and Kiev.
Earlier last
week, officials from the two countries held their first face-to-face talks in
Turkey since the war began.
After
contacting Trump, President Putin told reporters in the Black Sea that ‘efforts
are moving in the right direction.’
According to
him, ‘We have agreed with the US president that Russia is willing to work with
Ukraine on a possible peace agreement.’
At a time
when progress has been made between the two countries during the three-year
war, however, it is still being described as failing to meet expectations.
German
Chancellor Friedrich Merz wrote in a post on X late last night that European
leaders are planning to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions after
being informed about the talks with Putin.
However,
Trump does not seem ready for this. When President Trump was asked why he did
not impose fresh sanctions on Moscow to push for a peace agreement, the US
President said that he thought progress was possible and that imposing
sanctions could worsen the situation.
He added
that ‘there are some big obstacles in this, if there is no progress, I will
back down.’
At the same
time, President Trump warned that ‘I can also abandon this process and this is
not my war.’
It should be
noted that during his visit to the Middle East, Trump had offered to attend the
talks in Turkey if Vladimir Putin participated, but the Russian president did
not attend the negotiation session but sent his team.
Donald Trump
has been pressuring Presidents Putin and Zelensky to agree to end the
three-year war.
