President Biden and German Chancellor vow to continue sanctions on Russia:

US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Schulz have expressed their determination that they will continue to impose sanctions on Russia due to the war in Ukraine.

According to the Reuters news agency, an EU official has warned that any arms supply by China to Russia will also be subject to sanctions.

A senior official in the administration of the US presidential office said that Biden and Schulz met separately in the Oval Office for more than an hour. During the talks, the two leaders focused on the importance of continued 'global solidarity' with the people of Ukraine and ongoing efforts to provide security, humanitarian, economic and political support to Ukraine.

President Biden thanked the German leader for his "strong and stable leadership" and support for Ukraine. German Chancellor Olaf Schulz said it was important to show that allies would continue to support Ukraine "as long and as far as necessary".

Prior to the meeting between the two leaders, US officials had said that topics of discussion would include the state of the war and how to respond if China provides military aid to Russia.

German Chancellor Schulz arrived in Washington on a one-day short visit. There were no other meetings on his agenda. It was his second visit to the White House since taking office in December 2021.

President Biden's national security adviser also met one-on-one with his German counterpart.

Washington has said in recent weeks that China is considering supplying Russia with weapons, but US officials have not provided evidence.

Beijing has denied any intention to supply arms to Russia.

Before the German chancellor's meeting with President Biden, White House press secretary Karen Jean-Pierre told reporters that "we haven't seen China do anything yet, because it's a matter of lethal weapons."

He said that every step of China towards Russia will make its relations with Europe and other countries of the world difficult.
