What is
Greenland and why is it important to the United States?
Donald
Trump's desire to acquire Greenland, the world's largest island, has made the
country a hot topic in the media and global politics. The United States
considers Greenland to be strategically important to it.
Trump said
in a post on the social media platform Truth Social last month that "for
the purposes of national security and freedom around the world, the United
States feels that it has a great need to own and control Greenland."
Trump has
previously expressed his views on acquiring Greenland and he also presented
this idea during his first presidential term in 2019.
European
opposition
Greenland
and Denmark have both rejected Trump's proposal. Greenland is part of the
Danish Commonwealth.
Now, France
and Germany have recently opposed Trump's statement about Greenland.

German
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that ‘the principle of the inviolability of
borders applies to every country, whether it is a small country or a very large
power’.
French
Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Bierrot said in his statement that the European
Union will not allow other nations of the world to invade its sovereign
borders.
Let’s
examine what is the importance of Greenland and why is the United States
interested in it?
What is
Greenland?
Greenland is
the largest island in the world, located between the Pacific Ocean and the
Arctic Ocean, and is closer to New York than to the Danish capital Copenhagen.

The island
has been under Danish control since the 14th century, but Greenland became an
autonomous region in 1979. It has its own prime minister and government, but is
part of the Danish Commonwealth, which provides a large part of its finances.
Greenland is
home to a large US Air Force base and the island's ice sheet contains valuable
mineral deposits, including uranium and large amounts of oil and natural gas.
Greenland covers
an area of more than 2.166 million square kilometers. The population is
around 57,000. Most people are involved in fishing. Danish and English are also
spoken on the island, along with the local language of Greenland. The head of
state is King Frederik of Denmark, while Møteborg Egård is the prime minister.
Greenland
and Climate Change
There are
two months each year in Greenland when the sun shines continuously and never
sets. More than 80 percent of the island is covered in more than four
kilometers of ice, which is rapidly melting due to climate change.
David
Holland, a climate scientist at New York University, says that Greenland is in
a region that is warming four times faster than the rest of the world.
Holland
added that not only is the ice melting in Greenland, but its color is also
changing, and instead of being a white sheet of ice stretching for miles, it is
becoming blue in some places (the color of water) and green in others (the
color of plants). This is also having an impact on the seasons around the
world. Because the whiteness of the snow reflects the light and heat of the
sun's rays, while the blue and green colors absorb them.
Erik Rignot,
a climate scientist at the University of California, Irvine, says Greenland’s
melting ice sheet could change the shape of coastal areas around the world.
There’s enough ice there to raise sea levels by 24 feet.

Mark Seres,
director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado, says Greenland
will be a major focus of attention in the current century because of the impact
of melting ice there on sea levels.
He said that
Greenland has been melting 182 billion metric tons of ice every year since
1992.
The vast
island of Greenland lies in the Arctic Circle between the US, Russia and
Europe, which increases the strategic importance of the region. The US and many
other countries have been eyeing it for more than 150 years.

As the ice melts due to climate change, shipping in the Arctic region is increasing. Its importance is also growing from an economic perspective, because once the ancient rocks are exposed, mining will establish new industries and new businesses and provide opportunities for trade to flourish.
Greenland
of the Future
d has been researching Greenland's ice since 2007 and has made more than 30 scientific trips there. He says, referring to the future, that I see it as very beautiful. There are going to be breathtaking scenes. Ice floes the size of the Empire State Building floating in the water and crashing against rocks, beautiful wildlife, seals and whales swimming in the waters, the most beautiful, fascinating and amazing sights will be seen.
