Shakira acquitted of tax fraud case, Spanish court orders return of fine with interest
A Spanish
court has acquitted Colombian singer Shakira of tax fraud, ending a long legal
battle.
According to
news agencies, the Spanish High Court has ordered Shakira to repay more than 60
million euros in fines she had previously paid, including interest. The court
ruled that the allegations against the singer could not be proven based on the
evidence.
According to
court documents, Shakira was accused of not paying the correct taxes on her
income in Spain between 2012 and 2014 and allegedly evading taxes of 14.5
million euros. The prosecution argued that she was living in Spain during this
period, but kept showing her residence in another country in her tax records.
On the other
hand, Shakira said in her response that she wants to live a peaceful life with
her children and does not want her sons to see their mother in a long legal
battle. According to her, the mental stress and emotional difficulties
associated with this case are now over.
The singer
once again declared herself innocent and said that the Spanish tax authorities
were harsh with her. She maintained that until 2014, most of her income came
from international music tours and she spent most of her time outside Spain
during this time.
According to
Shakira, she declared Spain as her permanent tax residence in 2015 and had
already paid 17.2 million euros in taxes.
After the
court decision, the matter has now been legally settled in the singer's favor,
which is also receiving different reactions from her fans and legal experts.
