What dangerous disease can viruses in seafood cause?
A virus that
infects shrimp and other seafood can now cause a new emerging eye disease in
humans, a disease that can lead to permanent blindness, according to the latest
research.
Chinese
scientists have linked Covert Mortality Noda Virus (CMNV) to a specific disease
called Persistent Ocular Hypertension Viral Anterior Uveitis (POH-VAU).
They found
evidence of the virus in eye tissue from people with the disease, many of whom
had recently confirmed contact with raw seafood or aquatic animals.
If the link
is fully proven, CMNV would be the first virus to be transmitted from aquatic
life to humans and cause eye disease, and experts say it could become a serious
health problem in the future.
