Canadian
Prime Minister and Chinese President meet in Beijing: Agree to move forward in
agriculture, energy and economic sectors
Canadian
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the Great
Hall of the People in Beijing. This is the first visit by a Canadian leader to
China in many years.
The last
time Justin Trudeau visited China was in 2017, after which the two countries
have been embroiled in a long diplomatic standoff.
In his
opening remarks at the recent meeting, Prime Minister Carney said that both
countries should focus on immediate progress in agriculture, energy and
economy. President Xi Jinping said, "This is your first visit since taking
office and the first visit by a Canadian Prime Minister to China in eight
years."
Xi Jinping
said that cooperation between the two countries in various fields has achieved
positive results in recent months. He further said that China-Canada relations
are beneficial for world peace, stability, development and prosperity.
Prime
Minister Karni said in his address that we can re-establish the excellent
relations of the past between the two countries and create a new chapter. We
can bring stability, security and prosperity to the people on both sides and so
on
President Xi
said on this occasion that there has been a "positive change" in the
relationship between China and Canada after meeting Carney during the
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in South Korea last year.
On Thursday,
Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang also hailed this "positive change" in
the relations between the two countries, calling it the "beginning of a
new era".
