Canadian Prime Minister and Chinese President meet in Beijing: Agree to move forward in agriculture, energy and economic sectors

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. This is the first visit by a Canadian leader to China in many years.

The last time Justin Trudeau visited China was in 2017, after which the two countries have been embroiled in a long diplomatic standoff.

In his opening remarks at the recent meeting, Prime Minister Carney said that both countries should focus on immediate progress in agriculture, energy and economy. President Xi Jinping said, "This is your first visit since taking office and the first visit by a Canadian Prime Minister to China in eight years."

Xi Jinping said that cooperation between the two countries in various fields has achieved positive results in recent months. He further said that China-Canada relations are beneficial for world peace, stability, development and prosperity.

Prime Minister Karni said in his address that we can re-establish the excellent relations of the past between the two countries and create a new chapter. We can bring stability, security and prosperity to the people on both sides and so on

President Xi said on this occasion that there has been a "positive change" in the relationship between China and Canada after meeting Carney during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in South Korea last year.

On Thursday, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang also hailed this "positive change" in the relations between the two countries, calling it the "beginning of a new era".
