Who is Zahran Mamdani, the first Indian-origin Muslim candidate for mayor of New York?
Zahran
Mamdani, a 33-year-old Muslim politician, has surprisingly beaten former
Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary race for mayor of New York
City.
According to
Reuters, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, 67, said in an address to his
supporters that he had called Zahran Mamdani to congratulate him on winning the
primary race for mayor.
Zahran
Mamdani, an Indian-American citizen, was a foreign face to voters when he
joined the Democratic primary race, promising to reject President Trump's
policies.
According to
the preliminary results, 44 percent of voters chose Democratic candidate Zahran
Mamdani, while 36 percent chose former Governor Andrew Cuomo as their first
choice, while 11 percent chose Brad Lander.
The other
nine Democratic candidates in the mayoral race were far behind Zahran Mamdani.
After this
victory, Zahran Mamdani will be the official candidate of the Democratic Party
for the New York mayoral election in November.
In his first
speech after winning, Zahran Mamdani said, “Today… with a vision for a city
that every New Yorker can afford, we have won.”
He rejected
President Trump’s policies and promised to make New York a model city for the
Democratic Party.
Although the
final results will not be officially announced until next week, other
candidates have admitted their defeat according to unofficial results.
Zahran
Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, would become New York's first Indian-American
Muslim mayor if he wins and has also been a vocal advocate for Palestinian
rights.
He was
elected to the state assembly in the New York borough of Queens, where he
received the support of two prominent progressive politicians, Senators Bernie
Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
During the
primary campaign, opponent Andrew Cuomo called Zahran Mamdani inexperienced,
while the Muslim politician accused him of harassment.
In 2018,
Cuomo emerged as a critical voice against the president during Donald Trump's
first term, on the basis of which former President Bill Clinton and former New
York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced their support.
During the
election campaign, the differences between the two candidates were clear.
Andrew Cuomo, an establishment supporter who served as governor for ten years,
while Mamdani is a progressive and fresh face who promised to leave the past
behind.
