US bans entry to citizens of 12 countries, including Iran and Afghanistan

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order banning entry to the United States for citizens of 12 countries, including Afghanistan and Iran.

According to the AFP news agency, President Trump said the move was in response to an attack on a Jewish protest in Colorado.

According to US authorities, the man involved in the attack was living in the United States illegally.

The countries whose citizens have been banned by President Trump include Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Haiti, Eritrea and Equatorial Guinea.

While citizens of seven countries have been subject to a partial travel ban, including Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

The White House says the travel ban will take effect on Monday.

President Trump said in a video message on the social media platform X that “the recent terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado, has made clear the dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who have not been properly vetted. We do not want them (in our country).”

President Trump, referring to his first term in office, said that the United States is protecting itself from terrorist attacks that occurred in Europe due to the measures taken in 2017.

It should be noted that in 2017, President Trump banned citizens of several countries, most of which were Muslim-majority, from entering the United States.

In a video message, President Trump said, “We cannot allow open migration of citizens of any country that cannot be safely and reliably tested and screened. That is why today I am signing a new executive order.”

However, President Trump’s travel ban order could face legal challenges, as other draconian measures have been challenged in court.

The suspect, Mohammed Sabri Suleiman, has been accused of throwing firebombs and gasoline at a gathering in support of Israeli hostages held by Hamas on Sunday.

US Homeland Security officials say Suleiman was living in the United States illegally while his tourist visa had expired. Suleiman applied for political asylum in September 2022.
