President
Trump welcomes temporary relief from court on tariffs
US President
Donald Trump has welcomed the temporary suspension of a court order blocking
his aggressive tariff strategy.
According to
the British news agency Reuters, the United States Court of Appeals for the
Federal Circuit in Washington said on Thursday that it was staying the lower
court's decision to consider the government's appeal, and ordered the
plaintiffs in the cases to respond by June 5 and the administration by June 9.
On
Wednesday, the US Court of International Trade blocked President Donald Trump's
tariff orders on the grounds that he had exceeded his authority by imposing
tariffs on imports from a few countries that buy less from the United States
and import more.
Welcoming
this new turn in the legal battles over his trade policies, President Trump
criticized the Manhattan-based trade court, calling it “terrible.”
According to
the French news agency AFP, he said on his social media platform Truth that
“these behind-the-scenes scoundrels should not be allowed to destroy our
nation.”
President
Trump’s policy of imposing additional tariffs on imports from foreign countries
has severely affected global trade and damaged financial markets.
The sudden
changes in tariffs have severely affected companies large and small, and supply
chains and production are struggling to adapt to the new policy.
The Trump
administration called the decision “clearly wrong” and expressed confidence
that the decision would be reversed on appeal.
White House
spokeswoman Caroline Levitt told reporters that the judges “blatantly used
their judicial power to usurp President Trump’s authority.”
