A daily spice helps prevent dangerous cancer

Scientists say that adding turmeric to the daily diet can help prevent bowel cancer.

A study conducted at the University of Leicester has found that curcumin, the compound that gives turmeric its yellow color, can stop the growth of early cancer cells in the bowel.

Experts said that this spice neutralizes dangerous cells before they grow and form tumors.

The study revealed that curcumin blocks a key protein that causes dangerous cells to spread, preventing it from functioning.

In lab experiments, the team applied supplement-level doses of curcumin to bowel tissue.

The results showed that the compound stopped the growth of cancer stem-like cells. These are believed to be the cause of tumor growth and recurrence.

Research published in the journal Cancer Letters found that curcumin transforms these cells into a less harmful form, reducing their ability to divide and mature in situ.
